A few months ago I attended the Dutch PHP TestFest. It really shoud have been called the Belgian/Dutch PHP TestFest, since about half of the people there were from the
Belgian PHP user group. One of them,
Felix de Vliegher, even got a PHP CVS account because of the amount and quality of his tests. All in all, the TestFest was a great succes.
Last week the Belgian PHP User group held their second meeting. Because the venue was fairly close to our office in Vlissingen, some of us decided to have a look. We were early, so there weren't many people yet, but soon the room began to fill up and in the end there were a little over 30 people. Not bad, given that this was only the second meeting.
After an initial talk by
Michelangelo van Dam and Felix de Vliegher about the aims of PHPBelgium and the programme for the evening we had our first of many raffles: The lucky winner got a signed copy of Ivo's book
Enterprise PHP Development.
Then we had the first talk of the evening: '
Improved PHP development' in which Felix gave an overview of the various things you can do to improve the way you code and the code you write. It was a bit longer than planned, but very wide-ranging and interesting.
After the coffee break it was Michelangelo's turn: He had to cut his talk about
extending the Zend Framework a bit short because it was getting late. A pity, because it was a very nice introduction to writing code for the Zend Framework.
We closed the evening with two more raffles and a round of questions: One lucky winner got an elePHPant, and one very lucky lady won a ticket for
ZendCon!
The round of questions was actually mostly about various companies looking for people, so if you are a PHP programmer looking for a job: Showing up at the next meeting might help.
That was the end of the formal part of the evening. Unfortunately we couldn't stay for drinks so we headed home. Many thanks to Felix and Michelangelo for organizing such a nice event and I certainly hope I can attend the third PHPBelgium meeting!
