A community around an open source project is always good. Talking to people in the community can give you support, or you can give back to the community by supporting others. But meeting the community in real life - and especially the people behind the project - gives it a whole new dimension. You can put names to faces, and make new friends. For symfony, the best moment for this is
SymfonyCamp, a symfony-focused event in The Netherlands.
Last year around this time I did not yet work for Ibuildings. And at my previous employer, I came up with an idea. Let's organize an event to give back to the symfony community. More people in the company were excited about the idea, and it didn't take us long to come up with SymfonyCamp. Last year was a big success for everyone involved.
I left the company to join the ranks of Ibuildings, but I will be there at SymfonyCamp again this year. I will be speaking about symfony's excellent web debug toolbar, a feature of the framework that is underestimated by a lot of people. But I'm not alone there. The impressive line-up of speakers includes symfony founder Fabien Potencier, and such community big-shots as Francois Zaninotto, Dustin Whittle, Ian Christian, Fabian Lange and Jonathan Wage. An excellent line-up of people to listen to, but also to talk to directly.
Aside from the conference talks, the whole event is a nice campsite, a BBQ and lots of cool people to talk to. An excellent way to give your community experience an extra dimension. Hurry up though, registration closes September 5th!
