PHP is a loosely typed language. Most of the time this is very useful because you as a programmer don't have to worry about typecasting: it's done for you. However, on some occasions this can cause some unexpected trouble. These issues can be hard to track down because the error usually doesn't show up at the place where you define your variable, but at the place where you want to use them (which can be in a totally different part of your application).

In this blog I want to point out what can happen if you try to access object properties by reference when the object is not initialized. Although this is not caused by typecasting, the encountered problems can be pretty similar on some occasions.

Last week I read about the functions imagegrabscreen() and imagegrabwindow(). They were added to gdlib and are available in PHP since version 5.2.2. Because I got excited I installed the latest version of WAMP5 on my windows XP laptop (the functions are windows-only) and started typing. The examples on php.net however will not work at first when you use WAMP out-of-the-box, so this is a little how-to document about how to get it working.

Some weeks ago I experienced the most severe amount of stress I have ever experienced. Of course I had some healthy stress before, which is good because without it the job would most probably get pretty boring. But this time it was different. First my shoulders and neck started hurting, and after a while my head started to ache as well. When I continued I realised my hands were shaking severely. It was a weird and not very pleasant experience. I thought I knew what stress was but this was something totally different. Whatever it was, I knew I didn't want it to happen ever again. My quest for reducing stress had started!

Yesterday, Carsten Pedersen and Roland Bouman of MySQL AB visited us to tell us a bit about the MySQL certification program. Although I've been using MySQL for several years they told me of some features I simply never used before. Of course I had heard of 'stored procedures' before, but I just did not use them at all. One of the reasons is that all of our products are database independent and stored procedures are not. In other words: writing a MySQL stored procedure for ATK would mean all people using ATK on an Oracle or Postgres database would suddenly get fatal errors.

In the training they explained what stored procedures and functions are and I got curious. "Okay, so I can use a programming language sort of thing in MySQL. So how powerfull is this?". Driving back I suddenly realised I would do a really stupid and most probably useless experiment: to try to build a website entirely in MySQL, leaving the PHP part out? With that in mind I couldn't really do anything else than boot my computer once I got home, and keep hacking it until my application was finished.

When building applications on an IBM i-series platform you probably want to use the DB2 database. Zend Core for IBM i-series supports this database since the db2_ functions were introduced. These functions allow you to use the DB2 database like you would any other database, but lacks the support for manipulating librarylists. It turns out this is possible by using the i5_ functions. Below an example of how to do so.

Afgelopen zaterdag ben ik met Ivo, Lineke en Guido naar het pfcongrez geweest. Daar aangekomen merkten we gelijk weer wat een Zend-logo op je borstzakje doet. "Hee, de mannen van Zend zijn er!". We werden vriendelijk ontvangen en streken met een kop koffie neer op het zonnige terras in Maarssen. Wat daar verder nog gebeurd is weet ik niet, want ik moest redelijk snel nog even naar Utrecht Centraal heen en weer om Lineke op te halen.

Onlangs kwam ik het probleem tegen dat ik niet met FTP op een bepaalde server kon komen. Dat is vervelend, want dat betekende dat ik Zend Studio niet kon gebruiken. Ik had wel toegang via SSH, dus leek mij de enige manier om bestanden te bewerken joe of vi of iets degelijks te gebruiken. Niet erg als je even iets moet aanpassen, maar ik denk dat iedereen het er over eens is dat ontwikkelen of bugfixen heel wat makkelijker gaat als je een grafische omgeving tot je beschikking hebt. Daarom ging ik op zoek naar een oplossing: is het mogelijk een map op die server te mounten via SSH?

Met de opkomst van web 2.0 is het gebruik van AJAX in een stroomversnelling geraakt. Deze techniek is in sommige gevallen zeer bruikbaar. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan het automatisch tonen van zoekresultaten terwijl je aan het typen bent in een zoekveld. Hierdoor kun je sneller zien wat de zoekresultaten zijn en zorgt het gebruik van AJAX ervoor dat de webapplicatie gebruikersvriendelijker wordt. Het gebruik van AJAX kan echter ook nadelige gevolgen hebben.

Het is al enige tijd geleden dat ik ben afgestudeerd. Tijdens de diploma uitreiking waren er verschillende afstudeerders die net als mij een kort verhaaltje vertelden over wat ze hadden gedaan tijdens hun afstudeer stage. Het was tijdens een van deze verhaaltjes dat een docent een ernstig vooroordeel over PHP uitte. "Omdat ze wel eens iets anders wilden gebruiken dan een simpel scripttaaltje als PHP, hebben ze gekozen om hun product te maken in ASP.NET".

Simpel scripttaaltje! Meteen was ik in staat om op te springen en iets heel ergs te roepen - maar ik besloot deze docent nadien (bij de borrel) aan te spreken en om verklaring bij deze uitspraak te vragen. Het antwoord was even fout als kort: "Objectgeorienteerd programmeren in PHP kan simpelweg niet, ja misschien dat het nu ietsjes beter wordt in PHP5 - maar PHP4 is gewoon een simpel scripttaaltje".
