Thursday, December 18. 2008 Back in November Adobe invited a representative of Ibuildings over (thanks Mike!) to attend Adobe MAX North America, amongst a small group of 13 other PHP and AJAX influencers. The main reason to invite us, was to start a discussion on the direction they go in respect to their Flex and AIR development and to receive feedback on some of the plans they have. Because of my fitting name, previous experience and current interest in Adobe products like Flex, AIR and Flash Catalyst (Previously known as Thermo), I was the chosen one to represent Ibuildings! Last week I attended this year's fall edition of the International PHP Conference in Mainz, Germany. Aside from speaking there, I attended quite a few sessions, and met up with a lot of people from the community. I had a great time, and definitely learned quite some interesting stuff.
I made a schedule up-front and even though usually I hardly follow such a schedule, at this conference I actually did for the most part. The reason I usually don't follow the schedule is because I want to meet people and tight conference schedule's make that impossible. The International PHP Conference luckily offers enough and long enough breaks to meet up with people and talk to them. Continue reading "International PHP Conference 2008" Monday, October 27. 2008 This week I'm at Microsoft's Professional Developers Conference (PDC2008) in Los Angeles in sunny California (yup, being a CTO is a tough job!). I was invited to this conference by Microsoft (thanks Bram!) because Microsoft is opening up to the PHP community, and I must say that so far they haven't disappointed me. Read what I've learned about what Microsoft is doing with PHP so far. Continue reading "Windows Azure and PHP"

Wednesday, October 15. 2008 We're proud to announce that Ibuildings is the premier sponsor of the PHPNW conference that takes place on November 22nd in Manchester in the UK. The conference features speakers such as Derick Rethans and Rob Allen (see the schedule for more speakers), and at 50 GBP it's very good value for money for PHP developers. We just spent two fantastic days at the Future of Web Apps conference in London. There were so many PHPers around, most of whom we'd never met before, and it was so cool to hear about your current projects - there seems to be so much going on at the moment, despite the economic downturn! When we weren't playing with Microsoft Surface or riding the Sun "surfboard", we heard the founder of Digg bashing PHP - or at least announcing that they are moving some of their software into Python. The rumour says this is because of a need to use real threading and some other features that PHP cannot provide at the moment, and in that case - for those components - it's the right decision (it's as important to know when to use PHP, as it is when not to).

[webmaster's note: due to a miscommunication possibly involving beer at one of the Zendcon after parties, instead of a day 2 and day 3 review, we had 2 day 2 reviews; there's some interesting comments in the post though, so we're still just posting it. Don't worry, we'll get someone to cover day 3 as well.]
As you might know I was one of the lucky few who Ibuildings sent to ZendCon. I must say that the conference was a massive success; everything just seemed to work well even when some speakers canceled on the last minute. I am going to focus on the conference day 2 in this post since all other days have been covered by the other Ibuildings people. Day 2 was full of interesting sessions from presenters including Elizabeth M Smith, Sebastian Bergmann, Andrei Zmievski and many more. Magento is very well architected - maybe sometimes a bit over-architected - and very promising. It has a modular approach and allows developers to build extensions and add functionality to it. Although the project is relatively young it has a big community and loads of (community) extensions available. The licensing allows you to use it in both commercial as open-source products. It even has an iPhone interface so who needs more Continue reading "ZendCon Day 2" They also made some announcements:

Well I am nearly through one of the coolest weeks of my working life, this having been my itinerary, Monday to Friday: London, Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, Dublin, London, and LA.
All for a good cause, of course Tomorrow a lucky few of us set off for LA for a brief road trip leading up to ZendCon. Since everyone there gets a chance to do the PHP Certification test, for some unknown reason I agreed to sit the thing, having never written a line of PHP code in my life. Watch this space, but miracles really don't happen. ZendCon will give me the opportunity to try and talk to every European voice I hear, as well as some serious bonding with our Dutch cousins. We'll also post regular live updates from the conference on this blog so stay tuned! Wednesday, September 3. 2008![]() A community around an open source project is always good. Talking to people in the community can give you support, or you can give back to the community by supporting others. But meeting the community in real life - and especially the people behind the project - gives it a whole new dimension. You can put names to faces, and make new friends. For symfony, the best moment for this is SymfonyCamp, a symfony-focused event in The Netherlands. Continue reading "SymfonyCamp 2008"
