ZendCon Day 2 - 2

[webmaster's note: due to a miscommunication possibly involving beer at one of the Zendcon after parties, instead of a day 2 and day 3 review, we had 2 day 2 reviews; there's some interesting comments in the post though, so we're still just posting it. Don't worry, we'll get someone to cover day 3 as well.]

As you might know I was one of the lucky few who Ibuildings sent to ZendCon. I must say that the conference was a massive success; everything just seemed to work well even when some speakers canceled
on the last minute.

I am going to focus on the conference day 2 in this post since all other days have been covered by the other Ibuildings people. Day 2 was full of interesting sessions from presenters including Elizabeth M Smith, Sebastian Bergmann, Andrei Zmievski and many more.

ZendCon Day 2

The opening keynote was from the Magento guys. Actually Zak Greant should've presented his talk "Age of Literate Machines" but unfortunately he couldn't make it.

Magento is an open-source eCommerce platform built on top of Zend Framework. Magento is very well architected - maybe sometimes a bit over-architected - and very promising. It has a modular approach and allows developers to build extensions and add functionality to it. Although the project is relatively young it has a big community and loads of (community) extensions available. The licensing allows you to use it in both commercial as open-source products. It even has an iPhone interface so who needs more :-)

ZendCon Day 1

Today was the kick-off of the ZendCon sessions. It started off with a keynote by Harold Goldberg, the CEO of Zend Technologies Inc., and Andi Gutmans who together did a review of PHP's growing role in the enterprise with some case studies.

They also made some announcements:
  • Release of Zend Studio 6.1
  • Partnership with Adobe
  • Release of Zend Core 2.6 for IBM System i
  • Dojo integration in Zend Framework

ZendCon Day 0 - Tutorial Day

After our amazing roadtrip (see previous blog entries for trip reports), it was time for the first day of the conference. Or actually, day 0, as the first 'real' day would be on tuesday when the main conference starts.

We first went through registration, which went very smooth (only very short lines) and then had some coffee. I first sat in on the Object Oriented programming tutorial by Marcus Boerger from Google. It was a structured overview of Object Oriented programming. The target audience was clearly PHP programmers that wanted to learn how to do OO programming and I think Marcus did a nice job explaining it.
